A lot of people here say prion, and every technician knows exactly what is meant. It is the refrigerant, the gas that carries the heat out of your room and dumps it outside. Freon is a brand name that became the everyday word for it, the way Colgate became the word for toothpaste. Ask for any of the three and you are asking for this job.

Cooling that faded over months rather than stopped in a day is the pattern that really does point at refrigerant.
Cooling that stopped suddenly is usually something else. Check the power, the filter and the outdoor fan before anyone opens the gas.
Weak cooling straight after a clean is worth knowing about: a coil packed with dust can hide a slow leak for a long time, and washing it takes the hiding place away.
Ice on the pipes outside means stop using it. Ice is a flow problem, and running a unit in that state is how compressors are killed.

One thing worth saying plainly, because it decides whether topping up is worth your money: refrigerant is not fuel and it does not get used up. A sealed system should never need more.
