Aircon Lifespan: How Long It Lasts, and When to Replace It

Most units last 10 to 15 years, and a well-kept one can go longer. How hard yours works, where it sits and how often it is cleaned decide where in that range it lands, and a few signs tell you when a repair has stopped being worth the money.

Most aircon faults are repairs. A capacitor, a fan motor, a control board or a blocked drain puts a unit with years left back to work, and those are the parts an aircon parts replacement visit changes at your house. This guide is for the other case: the unit that is getting old, and the question of when to stop repairing it.

How long an aircon lasts

Daikin and Hitachi both put the average life of an air conditioner at 10 to 15 years. Carrier Philippines puts it higher, at 15 to 20 years, depending on conditions and the wear on its parts. ENERGY STAR treats more than 10 years old as the first sign it may be time to look at a replacement.

An aircon's age, and what it says about repairing it A bar across the years from zero to twenty. Up to ten years, repair is usually the right call. From ten to fifteen, each repair is worth weighing against a new unit. Past fifteen, it is time to plan the replacement. A bracket under ten to fifteen years marks the average life Daikin and Hitachi give. repair is usually right weigh each repair plan to replace 0 5 10 15 20 years average life
  1. 1 Under ten years, fix it. A failed capacitor, a fan motor or a leak found and sealed is a repair on a unit with years left in it.
  2. 2 From ten to fifteen, ask before each big repair. This is the average life, so a large repair now is money spent on a unit near its end.
  3. 3 Past fifteen, plan the replacement. Keep it running while it cools, and choose the new unit before the old one stops in the hot months.
Drawn for this page from Daikin's repair-or-replace checklist, Hitachi's lifespan figure and ENERGY STAR's ten-year sign. Carrier Philippines gives 15 to 20 years, so a well-kept unit can run on past the bracket. Age is one sign of several; the rows on the next drawing are the others.

What shortens it in a Central Luzon home

Long hours.
TCL Philippines says a unit that runs constantly wears out faster than one used sparingly. A bedroom unit left on all night, every night, is at the hard end of that.
Damp and sea air.
TCL names high humidity and salty sea air among the things that shorten a unit’s life, which matters for a unit near the coast in Bataan or Olongapo.
Sun on the units.
Hitachi lists direct sunlight on the indoor or outdoor unit. An outdoor unit on a west wall in the afternoon is working against the heat it is trying to get rid of.
Dirt.
A clogged filter and a dirty coil make the compressor run longer for the same cool.
Gas topped up instead of a leak fixed.
A unit that runs short of gas works its compressor harder. Low gas means a leak, and the leak is the repair.

Most of that list is in your hands. The aircon cleaning schedule sets out how often each part of the unit wants cleaning, and the energy saving tips that lower the bill are the same ones that cut the compressor’s hours.

Repair or replace: the signs

Daikin’s checklist is a good place to start. Repair when the unit is under 10 years old and the fault is minor. Think about replacing once it is past 10 to 15 years, when it breaks down often, when it has a significant leak or a serious component failure, or when the repair would cost more than half the price of a new unit.

ENERGY STAR adds signs you notice without opening the unit: repairs that keep coming while the bill goes up, rooms that never get cool enough, a unit that has become noisy, and a room that feels damp even with the aircon on. TCL Philippines puts the first sign more simply: the room does not cool as well as it used to.

Eight common faults, and whether each points to repair or replace Eight rows, each with a dot in one of three columns: repair, weigh it, or replace. A dirty filter or coil, a failed capacitor or fan motor, and one leak found and sealed are repairs. A big repair on a unit 10 to 15 years old is one to weigh. An R-22 unit that needs gas often, a unit that breaks down every season, a serious part failure on a unit over ten years old, and a repair costing over half the price of a new unit point to replacing it. repair weigh it replace dirty filter or coil capacitor or fan motor one leak, found and sealed big repair, 10 to 15 years old R-22 unit needing gas often breaks down every season serious part failure, over 10 repair over half a new unit
  1. 1 Most faults are repairs. A clean, a capacitor, a fan motor or a sealed leak puts a unit with years left back to work.
  2. 2 An R-22 unit that keeps losing gas is the clearest case for replacing. The gas gets scarcer every year, and R-32 or R-410A cannot go into it.
  3. 3 The replace column is age plus a big fault. A serious part failure on an old unit, a breakdown every season, or a repair bill over half the price of a new one.

A unit that is not cooling as well is not always at the end. More often it is dirty or short of gas from a leak, and an aircon check-up finds which. The common aircon problems guide sorts the symptoms you can check yourself from the ones that need a technician.

Old units on R-22

A unit from before the newer gases came in probably runs on R-22, which the government calls HCFC-22. The nameplate on the outdoor unit says which gas yours takes. Under DENR’s schedule for HCFCs, imports were cut by about two thirds from 2025, most of what remains goes from 2030 with a small allowance kept for servicing, and imports end in 2040.

An R-22 unit can still be serviced, and a leak in one can still be repaired. It cannot be filled with R-32 or R-410A instead, because they are different gases that run at different pressures. So an R-22 unit that needs gas every season is the clearest case on this page for replacing rather than repairing again. What is freon explains the gases, and R32 vs R410A covers the two you will find in a new unit.

If you do replace it

Size the new unit to the room rather than to the old one, because the old one may never have been right. The aircon size by room guide works through bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. If the unit runs most of the day, the inverter vs non-inverter running cost guide shows where the difference in electricity adds up. We take the old unit down and put the new one up through aircon installation and dismantling.

Questions people ask

How long does an aircon last in the Philippines?
Usually 10 to 15 years, which is the average both Daikin and Hitachi give; Carrier Philippines puts it at 15 to 20. Long daily hours, sea air and a unit that is rarely cleaned put it at the short end; a unit cleaned on schedule and kept out of the afternoon sun can reach the long end.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old aircon?
For a small repair, usually yes: a capacitor, a fan motor or a cleaned drain on a unit that still cools well. For a big one, weigh it. Daikin’s checklist says replacing often makes more sense once a unit is over 10 years old, breaks down often, or would cost more than half the price of a new one to repair.
What are the signs an aircon needs replacing?
The room does not cool as well as it used to, it breaks down every season, it keeps needing gas, it has become noisy, or the bill climbs while you use it the same way. ENERGY STAR adds that a unit over 10 years old is a reason to look at replacing it.
Can an old R-22 aircon still be repaired?
Yes, but the gas for it gets scarcer every year. Under DENR’s HCFC schedule, imports were cut by about two thirds from 2025, most of what remains goes from 2030 with a small allowance kept for servicing, and imports end in 2040. An R-22 unit cannot be filled with R-32 or R-410A, so one that keeps losing gas is the case for replacing.
Does regular cleaning make an aircon last longer?
Yes. A dirty filter and coil make the compressor run longer for the same cool. Carrier Philippines says a professional service at least once a year is what lets a unit last as long as intended.

When to call us

When the unit has stopped cooling the way it did, book an aircon check-up and repair. The technician finds the fault and tells you what the repair involves before any work starts, so you can weigh it against a new unit with the facts in front of you. If it is a part, an aircon parts replacement puts it back to work.
